What is the difference between Abandoned Checkouts and Abandoned Carts? (SPM)

As a shop owner, you might already know the importance of abandoned checkout recovery, and you might have already set up abandoned checkout emails or Facebook messages to recapture these lost sales. This is good, but not good enough; because in reality, the abandoned checkouts is just a small subset of abandoned carts. Here is the difference.

Abandoned checkout is when a customer adds items to the cart and starts the checkout flow, but gives up before completion. Can you imagine the number of abandoned carts your store has every day? Way more than abandoned checkouts. According to Baymard institute, e-commerce businesses have an abandonment rate of almost 70%, that includes both abandoned checkouts and abandoned carts. More importantly, their research also states "Most of these will abandon even before they initiate the checkout flow."

If visitors start the checkout flow, provide their emails and shipping addresses, then leave your store, the abandoned checkout emails can reach out to them. What about the majority of the abandonment? Most people abandon before they start the checkout. This means that visitors do not even provide their emails when they abandon.
